How to Maintain and Clean Glass

Glass gets dirty very easily and it’s very noticeable, so it’s important to stay on top of its cleaning. The best way to keep your glass sparkling is to plan ahead. Here are a few tips on how to maintain and clean your glass.

Create a Schedule

The first thing you should do is create a regular cleaning schedule. It’s best to clean your glass at least once every two weeks. Two weeks is the sweet spot – your glass will have enough smudges to justify cleaning it without it looking too dirty to guests.

Use Mild Cleaning Materials

What materials are you using to clean your glass? It is important to use mild cleaning materials (nothing corrosive) and a lint-free cloth. You can make a mild cleaning solution by mixing one part water with one part laundry detergent. Make sure your detergent and cleaning cloths aren’t abrasive because they will scuff up your glass.

Don’t Clean on Very Sunny Days

You don’t want to spend a sunny day indoors cleaning. Aside from missing out on fun, cleaning on a sunny day will lead to smudges. Sunlight will heat up your glass windows, and cause your window panes to dry too quickly, causing smears. We recommend you clean when it’s cloudy.

Clean from Top to Bottom

If you want your windows and mirrors to be streak-free, clean from top to bottom. Start at the top and work your way down to make sure that drips don’t tarnish your cleaning job.

Try a Squeegee

There’s a reason why professional window cleaners use squeegees and it’s really amazing what a difference they make on the glass. Wiping glass by hand will always lead to a streak or two, but using a squeegee makes it effortless to clean hard to reach places on your windows streak-free. A long-handled squeegee is a smart investment if you regularly clean tall windows and works double-duty for shower walls.

Get at Tough to Reach Spots with Cotton Swabs

No matter how hard we try, the residue will always buildup in the corners of our glass. Our tip: try using a cotton swab to little nooks and crannies.

Use Your Old T-Shirts

Try wiping your windows with one of your old t-shirts. Old t-shirts aren’t abrasive and are absorbent enough to give a window a polished gleam. Plus, using old shirts instead of paper towels is a great way to save money and feel green.
